Chen Shaoxiong’s series “Upload and Download” (2008) of oil paintings of signature monuments and power structures of the contemporary art world such as the Tate Modern and the Centre Pompidou are covered by real time descriptions and commentaries of these architectures and destinations taken randomly from the Internet and written directly across the surfaces of his canvases.Mindful of Karl Popper’s theory of three worlds of knowledge,Chen brings together what Popper referred to as World 1, the world of material being, the physical shelves of art and power and what Popper referred to as World 2, the world of our subjective and personal perceptions and cognition. Like the Internet itself, Chen Shaoxiong’s paintings reveal fragments of World 3, which Popper describes as the sum total of the objective abstract products of the human mind. In Chen’s works, we are reminded again that the Internet is not simply an independent world, but rather one conceived and projected by our all-too human minds. Our understanding, experience, values, and ideology are mirrored in the organization of cyber space.
